Current Geek Episode 169: Now THAT’s how you play Star Wars

Wall of Touchscreens Makes Fleet Commander a Hutt-Size Star Wars Game
Arthur Nishimoto, a graduate student in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Electronic Visualization Laboratory, has developed his real-time strategy game to be played on a wall-size LCD screen. Players are divided into two opposing teams that take control of X-wings, TIE fighters and even Death Stars, all with a touch of their fingers.

Current Geek Episode 167: That’s no moon

LED Moon shines message of hope, no dark side to see
Scale models of manmade wonders are usually the stuff of gimmicky travel souvenirs, but could you resist a faithful replica that was a topographic clone of our closest celestial body? We didn’t think so. Dedicated to the super moon that brought his catastrophe-stricken nation comfort, Japanese designer Nosigner culled imagery taken by the lunar orbiter Kaguya to create a hope-swelling, LED-lit copy of Earth’s favorite satellite. Recently on display at the Dwell on Design exhibit in LA, this spherical lamp of lunar love doesn’t yet appear to be available for order — but then again, how do you put a price on hope?

Current Geek Episode 166: That’s a lot of Bat mobiles!

The Evolution of the Batmobile – Thanks @daghall!
Few vehicles, real or fictional, have had as much of an effect on pop culture and geek dreams as the Batmobile. It represents the gadgetized car that every geek had envisioned at one point or another. It stands for the innovations of mankind in ways that allow good to triumph over evil. It’s secretive, unique, and puts instant power into the hands of the person wielding it.

Current Geek Episode 162: The UFL!

Pro Football League Will Hold Player Draft on Twitter
“For those looking to be innovative and drum up some free publicity, social media offer an infinite number of possibilities, especially if you’re, say, a fledgling pro-football league looking to seize any spotlight away from the $9 billion National Football League.

So while the NFL, embroiled in seemingly unending labor strife, began its annual player draft last night at swanky Radio City Music Hall, the 2-year-old United Football League will conduct its own player draft this coming Monday — on Twitter.”

Current Geek Episode 161: A portal to your fan film

Portal turret replica has real laser, insatiable bloodlust
You might not remember Ryan Palser by name, but you’ll surely recall the good gent’s homemade Fallout 3 plasma rifle. He has since stepped his game up to bigger and badder video game weapon replicas, and has just completed the construction of the first of his forthcoming army of Portal laser turrets. Thankfully, Ryan has been sporting enough to build the older version of these human eviscerators (not the upgraded Portal 2 turrets, phew!), giving us at least a small chance of survival — provided we have the right gear, of course. See the laser-equipped, GLaDOS-approved, 38-inch tall turret next to its maker after the break, or hit up the source link for some gorgeous photos of its construction.

Star Trek fan-film from 1971
Betamax obsessive Ray Glasser produced this Star Trek fan-film in 1971 for a class at Ohio State; it’s a nice, corny piece of work. I really like the scenery-chewing acting, and as John at Neatorama pointed out, the sideburns and mustache for Spock are damned stylish.

Episode 160: How do you D&D?

No more excuses: start playing Dungeons and Dragons on May 11
The next series of Dungeons and Dragons Encounters is beginning on May 11. This is a program we’ve written about in the past. The concept is simple: by offering a standalone campaign that’s playable by beginners in short sessions, it’s easier than ever for people to begin playing.
