Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: “Bristol University researchers found that coffee drinkers develop a tolerance to both the anxiety-producing and the stimulating effects of caffeine, meaning that it only brings them back to baseline levels of alertness, not above them. ‘Although frequent consumers feel alerted by caffeine, especially by their morning tea, coffee, or other caffeine-containing drink, evidence suggests that this is actually merely the reversal of the fatiguing effects of acute caffeine withdrawal,’ wrote the scientists, led by Peter Rogers of Bristol’s department of experimental psychology.”

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: artist Liselore Goedhart’s unbelievably adorable illustration of the basic elements of all games, itself part of a card game meant to help designers “bring new characters and game ideas to life”, from the Utrecht School of the Arts (the program that brought you indie-cum-commercial hit de Blob), Monobanda and Metagama.

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: A couple of weeks ago we covered the Top 10 biggest tech flaws in films, this week we’ve got a kind of sequel (in the best Hollywood tradition), and we’re looking at the Top 10 myths has about how computers work in the real world. Now we understand the need to ‘sex up’ computers, as they’d otherwise be incredibly boring, but must these stereotypes persist?

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Via CINE-FILE contributor Michael Castelle, we learn of a mind-bending paper written by former Chicago gay rights activist and linguistics professor Michal Brody. She argues that the Michael Jordan/Bugs Bunny flick Space Jam contains several uncanny parallels to the Popol Vuh, the sacred Mayan text detailing the ancient people’s creation account. (The earliest surviving copy of this manuscript is actually in the collection of the Newberry Library.)

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: With its cinematic sweep, huge ensemble and mind-crushing premise FlashForward started off last fall with great promise. Sadly, the time-warped soap opera crashes and burns Thursday with a series finale that brings the curtain down on the mysterious conspiracy that triggered a 2-minute, 17-second global blackout enabling people to see six months into the future.

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: “Director Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit has been put on hold indefinitely because the movie has been caught in a ‘tangled negotiation’ over the future of the MGM movie studio. The film, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s first book in the fantasy series, was reportedly due to begin shooting this summer, but has been mired in delays. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, who will act as producer on the new film, recently dismissed rumors of trouble with the picture, insisting, ‘It’s not really been delayed, because we’ve never announced the date.’”
