Current Geek 37: “In my dreams, the animation is way better”

February 15th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Wagner James Au sez, “Second Life founder Philip Rosedale (who stepped down from managing the company he founded last year) is attempting an ambitious follow-up with his new spin-off company: Creating a sentient artificial intelligence which only exists in a virtual world, capable of thinking and dreaming. To do that, Rosedale will use Second Life’s grid of thousands of servers as the AI’s neural network. Or as his former CTO puts it, ‘[B]uilding Skynet always felt like an appropriate follow on to Second Life.’”

And, we get a great reader submission from Will S., and his trip to Apple. :)

Current Geek 36: “World of Fedcraft”

February 12th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Spooky, secretive, titanic US military contractor SAIC has bought out Forterra, a company that makes virtual worlds for government agencies. I sat on a panel at an SAIC event on games and public diplomacy a few years back that turned out to be filled with CIA and other spooks who wanted to know if Al Qaeda was recruiting in World of Warcraft. Wonder what they’re going to do with World of Fedcraft?

And, we get a great reader submission from Giang Hoang, about how Data protected her at School. :)

Current Geek 35: “We have the technology”

February 10th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: The human frame is built to handle running speeds up to 40 miles per hour, scientists say. The only limiting factor is not how much brute force is required to push off the ground as previously thought, but how fast our muscle fibers can contract to ramp up that force.

And, we get a great reader submission from Paul K. regarding his dad’s hoover. :)

Current Geek 34: “That worm looks so real!”

February 8th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they tackle how the new Dune remake is becoming as epic as Frank Herbert’s Dune series itself. Now that director Peter Berg has been ousted, new director Pierre Morel has decided to throw out Peter Berg’s script entirely, starting afresh with his own ideas and vision. ‘We’re starting from scratch,’ said Morel. ‘Peter had an approach which was not mine at all, and we’re starting over again.’ Morel also reveals that ‘It’s the kind of movie that has the scope to be 3D.’ He’s also keen on sticking to the original material and recognises that he must try to delete the images associated with David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune from the public’s consciousness.”

And, we get a great reader submission from David, who names his kids some pretty strange names. :)

Current Geek 32: “Plus ten to prison lock picking”

February 3rd, 2010

Join Tom and I as we talk about: A man serving life in prison for first-degree intentional homicide lost his legal battle Monday to play Dungeons & Dragons behind bars.

Kevin T. Singer filed a federal lawsuit against officials at Wisconsin’s Waupun prison, arguing that a policy banning all Dungeons & Dragons material violated his free speech and due process rights. (Thanks to Robinson A. for sending this along)

And, we get a great reader submission from Ben, who likes to memorize “pie”. ;)

Current Geek 31: “Houston, we have…electric personal flight vehicle.”

February 1st, 2010

Join Tom and I as we talk about: “NASA is currently working on a personal aircraft that will put jet packs to shame. The Puffin is an all-electric one-man airplane that could be the start of some new and amazing air travel technology. With two prop electric engines, lithium phosphate batteries and a top speed of almost 300 mph, the vertical take off and landing vehicle was originally designed for covert military insertions because it has a lower heat signature than combustion engines. The Puffin would also be super quiet – 10 times quieter than current low-noise helicopters, and since the engine is electric it has no flight ceiling and can fly up to 9,150 meters high, uninhibited by thin air.

And, we get a great reader submission from Melisa, about the most amazing birthday party we’ve ever heard of on Current Geek.

Current Geek 28: “Flying R2-D2, you are doing it wrong”

January 25th, 2010

Join Tom and I as we talk about how odd it is that that R2 flies in the prequels, not just because he never flew int he first three movies, but because he defies the laws of physics to do so. If R2 was flying like that, why would that be a problem? That would be a problem if he was going at a constant speed. I re watched the end of Clone Wars (the movie) and it seems like R2 is flying at a constant speed. Why is that problem? Let me draw a free body diagram.

And, we get a great reader submission from Chris T. and his cop car WoW playing antics. :)
