Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: When the Ole Miss administration voted to chuck Colonel Reb as the school’s official mascot in 2003, chances are they didn’t have Admiral Ackbar in mind as a replacement.

However, it appears that long after concluding his illustrious military career in Star Wars‘ Rebel Alliance, Ackbar is indeed in the running to be the school’s new sporting symbol.

A group of four students, dubbed the Ole Miss Rebel Alliance, have started a grassroots campaign to re-enlist the legendary Mon Calamari admiral through Notatrap.org — obviously named in tribute to Ackbar’s most famous utterance.

Scott and Tom are pretty excited to announce that they will be hosting a regular Friday evening show on the TWiT Network each and every week, starting in March! Read more after the jump!

Think of this new hour-long effort as “Current Geek: Long Edition” in a way. A chance to talk about more topics, host some guests, and geek out a little more. Current Geek will continue as it is…this is all in addition to that, plus we’ll broadcasting live over the TWiT network, in addition to regular podcast publishing.

We want to ask for YOUR help in naming this new show! We just know the best ideas will come from listeners. The only names we are trying to avoid are ones with “This week in…” in front of it.

So, what are your thoughts? No other rules…just good names we can choose from. Let it rip!

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: These are modern fossils. They are made from actual archaic technology that was once cutting-edge. Most of these examples were discovered in the United States, although the various species are represented all over the world. It is sad, but most of these units lived very short lives. Most people attribute the shortened lifespan to aggressive predators or accelerated evolution, but this is not necessarily true. It has been shown recently that the true demise of most of these specimens came from runaway consumerism and wastefulness at the high end of the food chain.

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Steward Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr, has just launched his next act, a web-based multiplayer game called “Glitch.” It sounds a lot like the original game behind Flickr, Game Neverending, full of puzzles, whimsy and warmth (like Stewart). The game’s in private alpha now, but the intro video and Daniel Terdiman’s profiles of the company on CNet are damned exciting.

And, we get a great reader submission from Lexi G about her computer names.

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: The next generation of explorers to walk on the moon or Mars could be called robonauts. They may perform similar scientific tasks to astronauts, but wouldn’t require any of the life support equipment or shelter. The first robonaut could travel to the space station to work side by side with astronauts in the next three years, if plans at NASA come to fruition.

And, we get a great reader submission from David E. (in audio this time!)
