Current Geek 103: “Now THAT’s a howdoyoudo!”

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: “Discover Magazine reports that despite the average person shaking hands nearly 15,000 times in a lifetime, one in five (19 per cent) admit they hate the act of the handshake and are unsure how to do it properly, regularly making a handshake faux pas such as having sweaty palms, squeezing too hard or holding on too long while over half the population (56 per cent) say they have been on the receiving end of an unpleasant handshake experience in the past month alone.

But help is at hand as scientists have developed a mathematical equation for the perfect handshake taking into account the twelve primary measures needed to convey respect and trust to the recipient. The research was performed at the behest of Chevrolet as part of a handshake training guide for its staff and is meant to offer peace of mind and reassurance to its customers. A full guide to the perfect handshake is available on Flickr.”

Current Geek 102: “You only eat them when they’re blue…”

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: To rebuild the same gameplay found in the arcade classic using browser-native code, he’s relying on local storage, HTML5 audio, Canvas and @font-face. Harvey is sharing all the code on Github as well, so you can run it locally.

Current Geek 101: “It’s a Mint, not a Hint”

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: YouTube user magx1 builds a lot of home-made gas lasers, running electric current through sealed tubes filled with various gases. When you do that, you get the gas atoms all riled up and their electrons absorb energy. Eventually, that energy gets released in the form of directional, highly focused light—a laser. There’s a bit more to it than that, but you’ve got the idea.

Current Geek 99: “Princess in another handheld”

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: It may or may not actually be the most compact Nintendo 64 we’ve ever seen, but even if it’s holding down the second spot, you can’t knock the ingenuity here. Crafted by one Evil Nod, the self-proclaimed N Gear 64 is little more than an N64 console tucked, shoved and crammed inside a Sega Game Gear enclosure. Best of all, the modder somehow stuffed an N64 controller in there too, yet still left all of the original markings for nostalgia’s sake. Head on past the jump for a video of it in action, or tap that source link to learn more about the build process. Riveting stuff, we tell ya.

Current Geek 98: “Roll Out!”

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Standing roughly 33 feet tall and weighing 6 tons, this Optimus Prime replica located at Beijing, China’s Olympic Park may but look a bit funky, but in an epic robot battle I’d want this one on my side.

Composed of junked car parts and various bits of scrap metal, the interesting irony of this unofficial knockoff is that if Transformers really existed this is probably what they would look like. Let’s all agree that this is probably the coolest way the world’s nations could encourage more participation in green environment initiatives.

Current Geek 97: “Happy Birthday, Airplane!”

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: It’s the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite movies of all time, Airplane! To celebrate, watch the classic clip above. When we were kids, my brother and I memorized the dialogue in this scene (every scene, actually) and would occasionally perform it. For our parents. Below is a delightful video featuring the film’s creators and the two actors reminiscing about the jive talk bit. For more, please see “Oh Stewardess, I speak jive!”
