I had a heart-warming geek moment recently. I have been using computers for…ahem…a long time. The first I used was a Digital minicomputer that we accessed through a teletype. At least it had punch tape! My first consumer computer was an Apple 2 followed by the 2+. My friends considered me a computer god because I had [4] 360K floppy drives!!!!!

My wife Debbie always made it clear that she HATED computers. I bought her a laptop and setup a Facebook account. I provided some basic training but both languished until the kids and grandkids moved 1000 miles away. One night while playing WOW I saw her reach over an turn on her laptop. A little while later I asked if she was “Facebooking”. She immediately said NO and then quietly admitted that she was. Now she shows me how to use Facebook. I wish she would remember that the ethernet cable is not the power cable but progress continues. (The STUPID BATTERY WON’T CHARGE… )

She has been assimilated.

Just listened to your Trek show this morning and wanted to comment on your Star Wars followup about it coming out in 3D. A couple of years ago, I attended a series of 3D seminars at the Directors Guild in Hollywood. The highlight of the show was a screening of the final battle from Star Wars: A New Hope in 3D. (hate having to add that, I was 13 when it came out, it’s still just Star Wars to me)
There’s a company in Westlake, CA that was pioneering the process of extracting 3D from existing footage, and they had done a test with this. Now, this was at least two years ago, but it looked amazing! I don’t know how some of the other scenes will hold up, but with this footage (and it was the digitally enhanced version, btw) and with similar space battles, it should look awesome.
