The US does not have car safety inspections in the sense that a state official will make sure your car is safe to operate before allowing you to drive it off. The only thing close to this is Smog but they don’t check your brakepads, tire tread, seatbelts. Only emissions.
So if you wanted, you could buy/make things to put infront of your airbag. Now if you get in a wreck and that contraption you installed prevented the airbag from operating in it’s intended fashion you can bet that your auto insurance carrier on down to the manufactuer of the wireharness of the airbag will decline liability.
