Current Geek 53: “Blargh!”

Join Tom and Scott as they discuss this: Joann Bruso, author of Baby Bites – Transforming A Picky Eater Into A Healthy Eater Book, a book on getting kids to overcome picky eating habits, has been blogging the half-life of a McDonald’s Happy Meal that she bought a year ago. In the intervening year, the box of delight, plastic toys and food-like substances has experienced virtually no decay.

And, we get a great reader submission from Dan about naming kids Xmen names.

As gross as this is, it still made me crave an animal style burger from In-n-out. It’s just to bad I live 500 miles away from the nearest one

I think you guys need to be more skeptical of things like this. This isn’t a Scientific test at all and there’s plenty of reasons the food wouldn’t decay (like preservatives). I think it’s unfair to say that McD’s is “space food” when it’s just the preservatives doing their thing and there’s no reason that you’re presenting that the preservatives are bad for you in any way.

McD’s isn’t the best thing you can eat, but it’s far, far from the worst; and the Chile’s burger is much worse for you than a big mac – check the calorie counts. There are 1560 calories in a Chile’s southern smokehouse burger and 510 in a Big Mac!!!

I really like your show but I think you guys need to be more skeptical about internet claims and not just jump on the bandwagon.

reference Chile’s website, McD’s website, and this great podcast:

Dave. Agreed that we should always have a skeptics eye on stuff like this, but dude…it’s freaking gross that people eat that stuff.

  5. James says:

Look at it another way Scott, food that decays quickly doesn’t keep as long, and in the process of decay the chemicals in the food might be converted into something much more harmful than what you original had.

now in the podcast the point was made that Mcdonalds makes their products hard to resist, well what about the writer of the blog or the people involved with Super Size Me.
